Rhain shot up off the floor.

Sunshine jumped next to him. “What was that?”

Sleep and terror were in her wide eyes.

He headed toward the doors. “Cannons.”

“Rhain.” Her soft voice stopped him in his tracks.

He glanced over his shoulder. “What?”

She lifted the amulet off her chest. “It’s glowing.”

He met her gaze. “Arya’s sister must be here.”

She grabbed the doorknob. “We have to find her.”

He seized her wrist. “What do you think you’re doing?”

She pulled on her arm. “Rhain, let go of me. I have to save her.”

“Have you ever been in a battle? Seen a man ripped apart by gunfire?”

Her face paled, but she tilted her chin. “Rhain, I have to find her. Please.” Her words were brave, but he could detect the fear in her tone.

“No, that’s not your job. Remember what Mirren said. That’s my job. The minute the amulet shines on her. It’s not just the army you have to worry about.”

She moistened her lips. “Your dad’s spirit?”

“Yes.”

“Then what do you suggest we do?”

He grinned. “Ride with me.”

He thought he’d have to fight with her on this like most people. But he forgot. Sunshine wasn’t most people. Her face brightened.

“Good idea. Let’s go. I love to ride dragons.”

He frowned. “I thought you didn’t like us.”

She laughed. “Silly. My dad’s a dragon. And he’s my hero.”

Her eyes shimmered with pride when she talked about her dad and he wondered if she’d ever get that look when she talked about him.
